Mellow Corn Whiskey
Mellow Corn

The forerunner and kissing cousin to Bourbon, American Straight Corn Whiskey is defined by the US Government as having a recipe or mashbill with a minimum of 81% corn, the rest being malted barley and rye. Today, Heaven Hill is the sole remaining national producer of this uniquely American Whiskey style, bottling such classic names as Georgia Moon, Mellow Corn, Dixie Dew and J.W. Corn. As world-renowned whiskey writer Jim Murray wrote, “If you are a true student of whiskey, your education is a long way from being complete until you have mastered this particularly charming form.”

Honey Whiskey

Jack Daniels Tennesse Honey Liqueur Whiskey
Jack Daniels Honey Liqueur

The new libation starts with Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 and mingles it with a special honey liqueur. The result is a smoother, sweeter version of Jack that is just 70-proof. It is a clear and understandable attempt to pull more women into drinking Jack. There is even a cute honeybee on the label. Older drinkers might take a shine to it, as well. I can see my late Aunt Letitia or even my North Carolina Gram sipping Jack's Honey.

The addition of liqueur does give the finish a vaguely medicinal, cough-syrup taste in the background of other flavors like butterscotch, pear and honey.

High West Rendezvous Rye Whiskey
High West Rendezvous Rye Whiskey

Rendezvous Rye is a blend of two exotic straight rye whiskies—one old, and one young. It marries the rich aromatic qualities of a 16-year-old rye with the bold spicy properties of 6-year-old rye to create a full flavored, very complex whiskey. The 6-year-old boasts an uncommonly high 95% rye mash bill. Almost every other straight rye whiskey you can buy today is barely legal, with 51-53% rye in the mash bill. Not Rendezvous Rye. It honors the way rye whiskey used to be made, with a high rye content and full, uncompromised flavor. With Rendezvous Rye, you get a taste of authentic rye whiskey. We hope you enjoy it.

Description: Marriage of two straight rye whiskies: a straight 6-year-old with a mashbill containing 95% rye and 5% barley malt; a straight 16-year-old with a mashbill containing 80% rye, 10% corn, 10% barley malt.

Bottling Details: High West does not chill ? lter its whiskies because we prefer to retain the natural oils that contribute ? avor, texture, and a lingering ? nish we really enjoy in a sipping whiskey. Bottled at 92 proof, the minimum proof where chill haze is less likely to form.

How to Enjoy: Great neat, with a little water, or on the rocks. The high rye mashbill also makes Rendezvous Rye perfect in one of the classic cocktails made with rye, like a Manhattan, an Old Fashioned, or a Sazarac.

High West Rocky Mountain Rye 21 YO Whiskey
High West Rocky Mountain Rye 21 YO Whiskey

This rye whiskey is highly unusual because it was aged in used oak barrels. Almost all American whiskey is aged in new oak and sold as a “straight” whiskey. Used barrels result in a taste profile less influenced by the wood, allowing the more delicate flavors of the rye distillate to prevail. A truly sophisticated sipping whiskey.

21 YEAR OLD - DANGEROUSLY SMOOTH

Bottling Details: As always, High West does not chill ? lter. We prefer to retain the whiskey’s natural oils that contribute ? avor, texture, and a lingering ? nish we really enjoy. If you see a harmless “haze”, rejoice! Just swirl the bottle and the haze will go away – what it contributes will remain.

Jim Beam Rye Whiskey
Jim Beam Rye

Rye gives this whiskey a distinctive flavor that is perfect for sipping over the rocks.

Gold with a light amber cast. Moderately light-bodied. Reminiscent of toasted oats, hazelnuts, lemon. Delicate, soft texture. Brisk and slightly tart on palate. Easy on the lighter citrus notes as more seasoned grainy and nutty elements dominate. Quite pungent in the finish, showing a little heat.

(ri)1 Rye Whiskey
(ri)1 Rye

The Look:
The (ri)1 bottle is striking, tall and slender with a hint of orange on the label. The bottle itself looks more like something we would associate with a vodka or something, and stands out from the typically squat and/or boxy bottles of whiskey we see out there.

The Nose:
Taking a whiff of (ri)1, we were immediately struck by how much more refined it was than most people's idea of what rye can be. In our experience, rye can be a bit rougher around the edges with less of the corn and wheat that can smoothen and sweeten bourbon. This drink, however, had notes of honey and spices, and retained the qualities we like in whiskey without punching us in the nose.

The Taste:
For us, rye has always been the peppery cousin of bourbon, and (ri)1 is no exception. It's big and flavorful, with lots of the spice we expect, but not in an overwhelming way. We tried (ri)1 straight, and it was fruity on the uptick, and dry on the finish, and not too overwhelming considering the fact it's a bit higher in proof. The spiciness was counterbalanced by an almost unexpected sweet tinge, and we detected a nearly citrusy tartness. All in all? Damn good.

Rittenhouse Rye Whiskey
Rittenhouse Rye

Produced in the tradition of the classic Pennsylvania or Monongahela rye whiskies, Rittenhouse is a much acclaimed rye now enjoying a renaissance in the major metro markets of the country. Available in the standard 80° bottling or in a special Bottled In Bond expression, Rittenhouse is a tribute to the classic rye whiskies that were once the preeminent American whiskey style, kept alive through the many lean years by Heaven Hill and two other Kentucky distilleries.

Rittenhouse 23 YO Rye Whiskey
Rittenhouse Rye 23 YO

There has been a renaissance in small-batch American Rye in the past few years and the Rittenhouse label from Heaven Hill Distilleries has been at the forefront. Heaven Hill is one of the country's largest, independent, family-owned distilleries and they have tapped their resources to find a select number of perfect barrels of 23 year old rye for this bottling. Bold, spicy and rich with a sultry, smooth finish, this rye isn't chill-filtered, allowing the spirit to showcase its natural flavors.

Van Winkle Family Reserve 13 YO Rye Whiskey
Old Rip Van Winkle 12 YO

Until now, most rye whiskeys were only 5 years old or younger. This 13-year rye breaks the mold. It's the original aged rye whiskey. The maturity it has received while aging is quite obvious when you take the first sip. Flavors include cocoa, vanilla, spice and white pepper. Rye whiskey lovers who try this bottling will never again look back at the younger versions.

Wheat Whiskey

Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey
Bernheim Original Wheat

Yes Virginia, they make whiskey out of wheat. Not all wheat, mind you, but mostly wheat. While Scotch is made from malted barley and bourbon is made primarily from corn, Bernheim Original is the only known whiskey on the market to use winter wheat as its primary grain. To be sure, wheat is a grain component of many other whiskeys (especially bourbons) — Maker’s Mark is probably the most noteworthy brand on the market — but it invariably takes a back seat to corn in the blend.

As you open it, you’ll find that Bernheim Original is instantly unique. The nose is reminiscent of rye whiskey, with a spicy kick that immediately takes you aback. But it’s surprisingly smooth after that initial rush of heat, offering muted pepper notes, big grain/fresh bread flavors, and a succinctly sweet finish. I wasn’t thrilled with the touch of bitterness that creeps in after that, meddling with what is otherwise a wonderful experience, but on the whole Bernheim offers a truly unique way to experience whiskey.
