Glendronach Distillery is located about five miles northeast of Huntly. Up until 1993, it produced two versions of its excellent malt. A sherry cask matured version, as well as a bottling that was matured in a combination of sherry, bourbon and plain oak casks. The latter was referred to as "Original" while the other version had the statement, "matured in sherry casks", on the label. In both bottlings, the Glendronach malt is rich and sweet, with malt coming through. Currently available is the "Original" and the "Traditional" bottlings, as well as an 18-year-old. The Glendronach makes a significant contribution to the popular, teacher's blended whisky that may contain up to 60 percent single malts, which is very high. One can still find, on occasion, a bottle of the sherry-matured Glendronach on the store shelves--but not for long. The just-released, and much anticipated, fifteen-year-old, all sherry cask matured Glendronach will be well received by the lover of sherry cask matured malts. Its amber, deep golden color seems to have imprisoned a Scotland late winter evening sunset. It is encouraging to see yet another industry response to the Scotch single malt connoisseur's desire.

GlenDronach have widely been known for their exceptional sherry cask matured whiskies and this one is no different. Matured in a Pedro Ximenez sherry puncheon, this whisky is a fruit lovers dream. Bottled at a cask strength of 58% abv (116 proof) and a limited release of 642 bottles. Tasting Note Appearance: Dark amber with a rich russet edge. Nose: Nuts and Honey and a concentrated mocha and date aroma. Marzipan and almond notes create depth and balance of sweet sherry notes. Palate: Enticing jammy fruits and bitter chocolate moulded around a base of Pedro Ximenez sherry and candied nuts.

Bright deep gold with a tawny centre.

Nose
Sweet aromatics of fudge and muscovado sugar. Fruit compote and glacier morello cherries provide added complexity.

Palate
Rich dark and seductive. Remarkable flavours of stewed fruits and all-spice marry together with classical aged Oloroso and toasted walnut bread and chocolate orange.

Conclusions
Tremendously complex and long.

The GlenDronach 33 year old is regarded by many as one of the distilleries greatest releases. Matured in the finest Spanish Oloroso sherry casks, this exquisite malt scored 88/100 in the 2008 malt maniac awards and was described by Jim Murray as a 'Golden nugget of a dram'. This sublime whisky is not to be missed.

Tasting Notes
Appearance
Rich mahogany with a distinctive tawny heart. Viscous and syrupy.

Nose
Pronounced and sweet. Huge and aromatic with a combination of sweet stewed fruits, nuts and chocolate fondant. Alluring.

Palate
This displays real elegance and exudes class. A myriad of spiced fruits drizzled in bitter chocolate sauce. This fronts a second wave of flavours including walnut cake and mocha. Rich and unctuous to the core. An alcoholic liquid dessert.

Conclusions
A masterful dram which pleases the most jaded of palates. Fantastic stuff!

More recently Glenfarclas 12 Years Old won Gold at the 2007 Stockholm Beer & Whisky Festival.

Body: Light, smooth.

Palate: Sweet, soft start becoming flowery. Crisp mid-palate then butter icing, lemon cheesecake and freesias.

Finish: Herbal and drying, a little like pot-pourri.

Without water: Intense, deep, creamy. The sherry immediately signs the aromatic profile with luscious fruity and spicy notes. Polished old oak floor. It’s like walking into an antique shop. Enticing scents of exotic wood (sandalwood) with a touch of cedar. Cigar box. Creamier notes rise up, like wrapped up in a delicate oaky frame. Orange crème brûlée. Candied fruit (tangerine, pineapple). Pralines. Dundee cake with raisins soaked in whisky. On time, cider apples cooked in a cinnamon syrup. Hint of damp chalky cellar wall.

With water: Follows the pudding trail. More crème brûlée, more sweeties (pineapple and pear drops) and licorice.

RUBBED ON THE HAND
Dried flowers, freshly baked scones, a touch of dried leaves on a wet autumn morning.

PALATE
Without water: Silky, caressing. Sweet at start then releasing a full bunch of spices: ginger, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg. The spicy screen then opens on exotic fruitiness. Roasted pineapple. Developing luscious dark chocolate and orange peel flavours.

With water: Gets minty (mint chocolate). The spices are tamed and toned down and the fruitiness is not so demonstrative. Orange notes survive though.

FINISH
Dry, spicy. Keeps teasing the taste buds all the way through and comes back on a sweeter fruity note
